Bob Geldof has defended Ed Sheeran amid controversy surrounding the singer’s tour, while also expressing admiration for Macklemore’s public support for Palestinians.
Speaking about the dispute, Geldof described Sheeran as a good man and said artists should be free to decide whether they want to address political issues from the stage. His comments followed tensions around Macklemore’s removal from the tour after the rapper made pro-Palestinian statements during performances.
Geldof also voiced support for Macklemore and musicians who chose to withdraw from the tour following the decision. He directed much of his criticism toward promoters and venue management rather than Sheeran himself.
Sheeran later addressed the situation during a Philadelphia concert. He apologized for mistakes and raised concerns about venues placing limits on what performers are allowed to say onstage. He has also spoken publicly about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The controversy has prompted several supporting performers and touring musicians to step away, while Macklemore has pledged tour earnings to organizations assisting Palestinians.
