The singer described himself as closer to the political center, saying he leans left on certain issues while also identifying strongly with his Christian faith, country lifestyle, and hunting background.
Rich said the reaction may have been driven partly by surprise. In his view, some listeners felt they were discovering a side of Jelly Roll they had not seen before.
